Dumpster Fire

The world is a raging Dumpster Fire.

And I’m over here painting my old dining room furniture.

Again.

And I’m down in the basement noodling around in my Cosmic Smashbook.

Also, I’m remembering to water my plants (most of the time).

Because when the world is on fire, your houseplants still need a little water. Your laundry still needs to be folded. And your soul still needs to be nourished.

Especially now. Your soul needs to be nourished.

I’ll be very honest

I’ve been reluctant to tend to my home and to my blog because I always used to feel a little guilty about “creating a home you love” while the Dumpster Fire rages. Maybe frivolous is a better word? Or vapid?

Like if you stumbled across this blog (Welcome!) and saw me over here painting old furniture and gluing sparkles into a notebook you would think I’m unaware. Or unconcerned. Or simply sticking my head in the sand.

That’s not it.

I don’t know how to solve the problems of the world. But I do know that we need a counterbalance to all of the news and opinions and anger and fear. Just like a five minute break would be nice. So here it is.

My little attempt at cultivating calm amid the chaos.

Don’t worry! He’s not sad. That’s just the face he makes for pictures.
Also, I am aware the buffet looks smurfy and a little crappy.
Don’t worry! The first coat of paint never looks good. It will look better (and dry darker) when I paint the second coat tomorrow.

I don’t have a Dumpster Fire solution

All I have is time (Thanks Government Shutdown!), a can of paint and a dining room that has felt unfinished for the past 10 years. Because although I wallpapered and painted the furniture, I never got around to the little finishing touches that make a room feel less like a big dressed-up box and more like home.

Painting old dining room furniture (and photographing your dog standing next to it) seems like such a dumb little thing. And maybe it is.

But it’s what I got today.

I can’t extinguish the Dumpster Fire.

But I can remember to water my plants.

And I can make a nicer space for my family to eat dinner.

Maybe that’s vapid.

Maybe it’s frivolous.

Or maybe putting a little energy into my home (and my blog) is nourishment my soul needs right now.
