I planted tomato seeds the other day. I don’t really like tomatoes. But I like the idea of planting seeds and tending to them, watching them grow. I like that they are just little pots of dirt sitting in a sunny window right now, but in a few months they will be tomatoes. What an act of trust this is — planting seeds.

I’m planting seeds in the rest of my life right now too.
Not tiny little seeds that I can hold in my hand like the tomato seeds.
Life seeds are more mysterious, requiring perhaps even more trust to know that they will grow and bear fruit.
Before you can plant seeds, you must prepare the ground, clear away anything that will get in the way of the seeds growing. I got a new job last year. And I worked really hard. It’s a long, boring story, but I liked my job right up until I didn’t. When I told my co-workers I was leaving, everyone asked the same question:
Where are you going?
I’m going home.
So here I am. Home. Sitting on my back porch on a beautiful spring day listening to the airplanes and the birds. And writing about planting seeds. What a nice day!
But where am I going with this?
That’s where the trust part comes in.
I’ve had an idea for a long time now, but I can never quite find the words to articulate exactly what I want to do and why it’s so important to me. Or the time to truly tend to it. Or the focus to turn it into a Legit Career. My Fabulous Brain doesn’t really think well in straight lines and spreadsheets.
I prefer to bounce around following what interests me like sparkly breadcrumbs.
Or seeds to plant.

Planting Seeds In My Life Right Now
These are my seeds. 💖
🌟 Create a home you love. I believe our homes are sacred spaces. However, I have not been tending to my home like she deserves, like my family and I deserve. I do love my home, but she’s old and shabby and life piles up. Somehow, I never find time to fold laundry let alone paint the bedroom or organize the pantry so the dog’s snacks don’t fall off the top shelf and hit me in the head every time I open the door. (I’m pretty sure the dog and my house both think that’s funny.)
🌟 There’s all the physical DIY, home improvement, make your house look pretty stuff that interests me. And there’s the underneath, the energy vibrating throughout our homes (and our lives) that is so incredibly fascinating to me. Creating a home that feels good, a home that nourishes our souls. That’s harder to write about (and photograph!) but I am excited to try.
🌟 Create A Home You Love, the blog. I am a writer. Boom. I have no trouble claiming that title. I started my career as a newspaper reporter, getting paid to write every day. But those were stories about other people. And there was a deadline I had to meet. Writing about myself and my life? Well, that feels weird. Like who really cares besides me? So I fill notebooks with blog ideas, but then fill my day with distractions instead of sitting down and writing consistently and imperfectly.
🌟 Making art. I am an artist. That title took longer for me to claim, but it feels a lot better now. I don’t make art to impress anyone or to hang in a gallery. I make art to calm-my-nervous-system-the-heck-down. It works! (There’s Actual Science about why it works, but I simply know in my soul that it’s true.) I want to explore this more and write about it and share it with the world in a way that is approachable and accessible for everyone, which leads me to …
My Sparkliest Seed
🌟 Cosmic Smashbook guided art-journaling experiences. Creativity and community. Yeah! When the world is a raging dumpster fire, every little thing we can do to take care of ourselves and raise our energetic vibrations helps both us and the world. I believe this down to my bones.
I see the proof every week at our Cosmic Smashbook Book Club.

Now that I’ve quit my job, my plan is to offer more Cosmic Smashbook and other art experiences both in-person and online.
My dream is to create little opportunities for people to calm their nervous systems, reconnect with their creativity, make new friends — and have a little fun.
Those are my seeds! I don’t have all of the details worked out yet, but I’m putting them out there on a fancy tray in a sunny window. I also know that planting seeds is one thing. Now it’s time to tend to them, nourish them and trust that they will grow and bear fruit.
What seeds are you planting today?
